No dues Fred...just a never ending stream of requests for tech support and
upgrades.<grin>

Fred have you looked at adding the capability to automate the scan/enter in
the UPC/ISBN and then go out to the public online Book databases to retreive
the mathcing info for the entered title? I've always wanted to do this for
my library at home. I've just never found the time to look into the
interfaces/API's avaialble to do this.

Congratulations, Fred! I would also like to put a link to this on my new
website. I will have a section there for Access information for students
reference.

I'll be in contact off group. As Jeff said, thank you very much for sharing
this with the Access communities.

Very well done! :)

That would certainly be a most desireable feature! Institutions like the
Library of Congress and the National Library of Canada provide web pages
that display the full MARC Cataloguing data for their materials. Doug Steele
has shown me how to use an OCX Web Browser control to "scrape" this
cataloguing data from the web page.

However, creating the process you describe is beyond my skill set! If I am
not mistaken, professional library software offers this type of feature, and
I believe that the Z93.50 standard provides a
protocol for this. But that's as far as my knowledge goes. This is, however,
something I am eager to learn more about, and I plan to take a shot at it as
time permits. I'll let you know if I make any progress!

Cheers!
Fred

I'd be willing to work with you on this Fred.
I'll spend some time browsing to see what is out there already. Most
solutions already exist in one form or another.

Thank you very much, Fred. I'm learning Access, but more than that, I have
an extensive library of books, both on writing and computers. This will be
quite helpful.

Correct. that is the protocol. However that is an ugly binary
protocol. Highly efficient in the number of bytes sent and fetched
mind you.

I looked at it once for an app I was thinking of building and almost
got a real simple query working in that protocol. I thought about it
a bit and decided I just didn't want to spend the effort right then
and there to get it running smoothly.

BTW the capability I really wanted to add to my app was to be able to
select the authors in my collection which were my preferred authors.
Then have the app hit a few such servers and locate all books by that
author and download all those. Then I'd ignore the big print, audio
cassette and other such editions.

Finally I'd download an abbreviated version of the books I had and was
looking for so when I hit a used book store in my travels I could
easily see if I had a book in my collection or if I wanted it.

Do you know just how many duplicate books I have? And just how many
times I've said to myself "I'm sure I have that book." And left it
there on the shelf. <smile>

Tony (Why, yes, books are a big vice of mine. Why do you ask?)

Thanks Fred! I'm just now getting it going, it is still in the propagation
stage, as I was finally able to get it fully activated with the new
nameservers just yesterday (a problem with the new webhost getting the new
nameservers activated properly), but, I am starting to put together my
layout and reference materials to start the 'construction' as we speak.

My website is http://datacomptech.com/ All that is there at the moment is
the default page, but, it's a start, and now that I have started my own
business again it will be a need for sure. Part of my MS Office training
programs is in Access, so I will have a section there dedicated to various
types of Access apps, with lots of links to various examples, tips and
tutorials. Your Library app will be a very good reference, and I would be
most happy to post links for other developers here who might like also to
share examples (demos) of their work, tips and expertise as well.
