Free news servers?

OORAH!!!

I use RoadRunner at home, but cannot from the
road.

After googling and finding most of the "free
usenet" sites inoperative, I paid the $4 entry
fee at free.teranews, but it's very slow and
often down. I also tried to subscribe to
news.cis.dfn.de, but after a week have not
received a password.

So...

Is there a freeware or low-$ news server that's
usually up and has reasonable speed?

news.cis.dfn.de is now "news.individual.net" for non .de users. Try again.

No, there are three servers in the RFN set...

From http://www.readfreenews.net

*news.readfreenews.net* is a text only server that accepts and
displays all articles in all groups carried but does not carry
any of the actual binary articles posted to any of the groups
listed. The server does accept and operate on cancels and
supercedes. It works on ports 120 and 80. No longer does it
work on 119 because of the SWEN virus hitting it so hard.

Retention: 160 days or so


*allnews.readfreenews.net* is a text only server that accepts
and displays all articles in all groups carried but does not
carry any of the actual binary articles posted to any of the
groups listed. The server does not accept and operate on cancels
and supercedes. It works on ports 120 and 80. No longer does it
work on 119 because of the SWEN virus hitting it so hard.

Retention: 30 days or so


*biggulp.readfreenews.net* is a text and binaries server that
accepts and displays all articles in all groups carried. The
server does not receive cancel or supercede messages.

Retention: 5 days or so for bunnies
Retention: 30 days or so for text


BigGulp is all but impossible to access right now do to Mike's latest
test servers are "borrowed" from the BigGulp set...

Perhaps it should be considered LittleSip, instead of BigGulp? :)
