I use FPROT and have never had a virus (but a couple of alarms), so
so-far-so-good. Question - it updates daily - does it do this for
anyone else? There is literally a daily update with new virus
definitions to download. That seems a bit odd.

When I was using Kaspersky it sometimes would update more than once a day.
If something new is around why not...it *is* a good thing, don't you think?

McAfee has also started releasing daily DAT files (antivirus signatures).
They started doing it on February 24, 2005. They wrote up an FAQ page
about the change.

You can disable automatic updates by going into MS Configuration
Utility and unchecking fpavupdm.exe.

Afterwards you can manually update on your own. If you practice safe
HEX and don't have a mission critical PC, then daily updates are not
really necessary, especially if you have heuristics enabled.

Hello bern11,

Not daily really, it depends. Sometimes every two days but i have had
days with tow updates :-)
There is literally a daily update with new virus definitions to
download.
That seems a bit odd.

Why odd? Sometimes news virusses appear and spread rapidly so be glad
that F-Prot is updates so frequently if it's needed.

Btw, i let the sheduler check at boot time and every two hours.
