FP2002 makes bad internal links

DonaldH

I've been using FP in various forms since '99 and am now using 2002, the XP
version. I have only noticed this issue since having access to various
computers other than my own. I suspect it is related to only pages published
since using the XP version. Here goes....

Reference to local images within my web are not correctly recalculated by
FP. The published page will have a URL such as

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/My%20Web/images

I checked some of my older page templates and they use the following syntax

fpweb:///images

I tried retyping the URLs in a template using the "fpweb" style. It appears
fine while editing and the images are pulled in correctly. After publishing
the URL is reset to the
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/My%20Web/ style and, of course
works only on my machine. I also tried "../images" and it gets changed as
well.

You can see this by "viewing source" on two of my web pages

http://www.tysknews.com/LiteStuff/balloonist.htm this one works (the URL
for the image is correctly listed as "../images/plain.jpg").

http://www.tysknews.com/LiteStuff/up.htm this one does not.

Any idea what is going on here?

I searched the directory I publish to on my machine and it appears I have
over 254 pages that are messed up!!

Thanks,
Don

Try Tools> Recalculate hyperlinks

Then republish the whole site..

&...

You're on a linux/apache box, rename all file/folder names that have spaces
in them (they will appear as %20)...also good idea to use all lower case as
well - you can use underscores _ instead of spaces if you want.

Make sure you Import images into FP first, before placing them into your
layout.

Nope, Bob.

The recalculate for over 800 pages took less than five minutes and did not
repair the "file:///C:/Doc......" references.

Then you will need to use Search and Replace.

Don't type ... browse to the actual image and fp will sort out the link for
you in the hyperlink box or picture properties browse ... then press ok...

Use the Insert picture icon .... when you save the page a box will come up
... there are three selections make sure (can't remember for fp02) the middle
one? .. the one for the location of the image ... is pointing to your images
file and the image is selected .. .that's the path...

your html should not be pointing to your hard drive .... it should look
something like ../images/mygraphic.jpg

FP03 will check for broken images in Broken links reports ... however fp02
will not....

This is a free addon that will do the job... it says for fp2k but I
frequently find addins will work for other versions .. so that try that....
it's available from Microsoft addin centre, however the vendor has now taken
it off his site as it's features are incorporated in another (to buy) fuller
addon that covers more ground...
which is http://www.instantfx.net/fptools3.asp

This is the free one
FrontFX ET Image Reporting
http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/downloads/addin/searchdetail.asp?a=237
This add-in will check all the images in your FrontPage-based Web to ensure
that there are no broken images. With a simple to read report with affected
pages and images listed, there will be no more headaches having to check
each and every page manually for missing images. Add To "ToDo" Tasks! For
disk based webs, the FrontFX ET Image Reporter can add all affected
pages/images to your Task list of things to do.

Since your on a unix server all your file names should be in LOWERCASE ....
and with no spaces ..(fp makes a 20% appear in the url when that happens ie
my20%graphic.jpg

But there are two addons (free) to fix those throughout your site as well...
and from a seo standpoint ANY url with a space should immediately be fixed.

Normally uppercase file names if you have them index should from a seo
standpoint not be changed... if any files are changed you should use a 301
redirect (not a meta refresh) to keep your seo standing for that file....

here are the two free addons for replacing spaces and uppercase

http://jimcosoftware.com/addins.aspx

When replacing your spaces be sure to use a dash - NOT a underscore _ as
google and other se's see the underscore not at all and the keywords become
one ...

good my-file.htm
bad myfile.htm
bad my_file.htm
