FP03 creates too long file names

When I go to publish, FP2003 creates derived file names that are way too
long for my server. It supports names including extentions up to 32
characters. My folder names were only 8 characters long and that generated
several derived names over 35 characters. My only solution was to shorten
my folder names to 5 characters, but this isn't going to work on larger
sites.

Is there a way to limit the length of names that FP creates when publishing
the site?

Can you give an example of the folder name in your site and it's resulting
derived name on the server?

I'm not sure how publishing is modifying your folder names. When I publish,
my folder names remain exactly as I created them.

Here's the longest one now in my /derived file before I shortened the base
file names to get the length down: Calendar.htm_cmp_tennis000_hbtn.GIF. The
"tennis" part refers to the Theme name, so I am going to shorten that next.
Don't know why it pads it with the 3 zeros.

I shortened the folder name to Cal and the Theme to 10S and that got it
short enought to use. However, that is too limiting for larger sites.

So it's actually the theme files that are being renamed when you
publish? What about files the files and directories that you create?
They aren't automatically renaming, are they?

I don't use themes so I'm not very familiar with their functionality.
Maybe someone with more experience with the feature can chime in.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

When creating a theme button or banner in _derived FP adds up to 19
characters to the theme and page names. (example
page.htm_cmp_themename010_hbtn_a.gif ). If your host limits file names to
32 characters, this leaves only 13 characters to share between theme and
page names, including the pagename extension.
Edit your theme and save as, using a very short name (one or two
characters). Apply this "new" theme to your pages. Rename your pages to a
maximum name length of 7 characters, ( abcdefg.htm ), with extn of .htm.

There is no way to reduce the 19 characters FP adds.
Interactive Buttons (applied using Dynamic Web Templates) may be an
alternative for theme buttons, but you will have to produce your own
banners.

Shouldn't this be reported as a DESIGN BUG to MS? There is no excuse for
ignoring the majority of the world that uses UNIX based servers for webs.
Looks like plain laziness to me on the part of the coder/designers. Is there
an MVP that talks to MS FP Product group that could bring this up?

This problem is, in fact, rarely brought up in this newsgroup, it affects
very few people. I have used 6 Unix servers from 6 different hosts, both
paid and free, and have never seen length restrictions in filenames.

It is not a constraint of FP, just a constraint of some older (or poorly set up) servers

Well how do I get rid of the stupid .'s except for the file extention. I can't have files like mypage.this.file.is.not.known.gif

If you created the file, right click the file name and rename it to my.gif
