FP 2002 Publishing Problem

A

Andy Asberry

FP 2002, XP Pro Below is the post I made on 2/6/04. That problem had
not been totally resolved. Now things are worse. FP repeatedly asks
for user and password. After 3 or 4 tries, I get the message "A web
does not exist at http://www.xxxxxxxx.xxx. Would you like FrontPage to
create a web at that location?"

I have three webs on 2 hosts. I get the same message on all of them. I
can't access any of them.

I have ordered FP 03. I hesitate to install it without resolving this
problem first. I'm open for any suggestions.

After any failed publish event you could have corrupt FP META data
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in your IE Temp folder, C:\WINDOWS\Temp and
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Open FP and you local site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
and try to republish changed pages (remove any do no publish
changes from the index file)

PS
In a pinch, you could also, while the local site is open in FP, also
open the remote site in FP and carefully Copy / Paste from one
site to the other

| I made some minor changes to three pages. The new image is in the
| image file. All the other pages updated except the index. All I
| changed on it was the "last update" date.
|
| When it gets to the "processing web updates" I get the error message
| "server can't find page"
|
| Details say to make sure FP extensions and MS Share point are loaded.
|
| On the publish list, the changed pages are still showing to publish. I
| turned them off and the index still will not load.

this may or may not have anything to do with your problem..but, some of your pages have page names with spaces in them still, replace with underscores.

also does your server require .htm, or .html for index ext. or perhaps default.xxx rather than index??

just a wild shot

The web has been up for more than a year. My difficulties began a
month ago.
It has been pointed out before that I should change the page names.

My problem is: I can't access the web sites. The host, Interland, has
been helpful. They can publish from their end. I have confirmed my
user name and password.

I'm not sure if it matters but my FP 2002 is the version that came
with Microsoft Office XP.

How are you trying to access or publish, can you provide the steps?

Try this:

1. In Windows Explorer, find and delete all FP Temp Files.
By default, these reside in
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\FrontPageTempDir.
2. In Windows Explorer, find and delete all hidden *.web files
3. In Windows Explorer, find and delete the cmdui.prf file.

Thanks for everyone's patience.

Jim, I followed the steps on your web page except the first one,
obviously.

My exact procedure. FP screen; file; publish web

Publish web window comes up: publish from, publish to (all correct)

Connect window comes up: the web name is correct; enter user name and
password; press OK (the window continues to come up until I press
cancel

Publish destination window, enter www.xxxxx.xxx; press OK

Connect window again; repeats until I press cancel

Microsoft FrontPage window "A web does not exist at
http://www.xxxxx.xxx. Would you like FrontPage to create a web at that
location?" Press OK (in desperation)

MS FP window, "Unable to open www.xxxxx.xxx and a list of 4 possible
causes.

With the symptoms you describe, it seems that the FrontPage Server
Extensions are absent, corrupted, or misconfigured.

Can you open the remote site's root Web by choosing Open Web from the
File menu? If so, do that, and then choose Server from the Tools menu,
and then Administration. Then, run Check Server Health with all the
checkboxes checked.

If you can't do that, or if it doesn't resolve the problem, you may
need to remove and reinstall the FrontPage Server Extensions. Your
host may provide this function in their support pages. If they don't,
or if those pages also fail, then contact the host and open a trouble
ticket.

I cured my problem, Jim. I've been using the same user name for 5
years. My host just decided it must be in lower case. Grrr
