I have the same problem. I don't even have a printer attached. I have also removed all printers, but the wizard keeps finding a new one. It doesn't list a type or name, and it can't ever find the correct software to install. So the wizard pops up at each boot.

I did your suggestion. I still get the message every time
I boot. There still many refs to printers when doing a
text search. Also, I have a printer driver program that
is listed on the add and remove hardware page. It will not
let me remove the program. Also, there is no printer
installed on the printer tab. Thx

You have to let the hardware wizard run its course.

Cari,
I appreciate your help. Any other suggestions?
I notice that there are still many orphaned hp files all
over my HD. I'm afraid that something is sitting in the
registry causing this problem.
Thanks Joe

Letting the hardware wizard run its course obvsiously
seems like the logical choice. But it always comes up
unable to install.
**As a note. Today I used a HP 940c CD's uninstall
program to try to remove widowed files. Then I tried to
install the driver using the CD, not the wizard.
**At the end of the install, a message window says that
the driver was not installed correctly because "the
specified port was unknown."
I attempted to get some HP help but like many companies,
they have outsourced to India and were COMPLETELY
USELESS!!

Stan,
Thanks for the help... but using the KB was my first
attempt. I have tried everything, but I've had this
problem for 6 months and think I'll have it forever.
THANKS MICROSOFT.
