Forward or reply brings up the wrong idenity

I've been using Windows mail for more than a year now, without a problem. I
have multiple accounts which I use for my e-mail. Always when I have
replied or forwarded an e-mail, the account name that it was received in
has automatically been entered in the "from" window. That is, if the mail
that I am forwarding was received by account #1 that is the name that would
appear in the from box. Now all of a sudden it is entering my default
account name, but not with all of my accounts, just one. This has led to
problems for me with mailboxes not recognizing the name that the mail is
being sent from. When it started happening I did not notice the mail going
out from the wrong account, of course now I change it manually, but it's not
the best solution, I'd like to get it back to the way it should be. I've
looked through accounts and options, but have not been able to figure what
has happened to cause this problem. I'm afraid that it's the dreaded
computer gremlins again. This just started yesterday, and has caused me
considerable grief if a very short time. If anyone can point me to a
solution I would be very grateful.

Thank you in advance,

Penny

You can try removing the one account that is problematic, close and reopen
WinMail and then add it back again and see if that fixes it.

Thank you for the suggestion, I did try your fix, unfortunately it did not
help. I guess that I'll have to try to stay on top of changing the "from"
line on my responses or forwards from that account. I even tried making the
problem account my default account, which didn't help either.

Thanks again.

Penny (or whomever I are) :)

First do what Steve suggested (delete and recreate the problem account).
If no improvement, you need to monitor which account, if any, Windows
Mail is identifying as the origin of the problem messages. In the message
pane, right-click on any column header (like "Subject"), select Columns,
and add the account column. Let us know what you find out.

This is very interesting Gary,

When I did this it shows that the account has changed, all of the old mail
that was not a problem is labeled with the correct account. But when the
problem started it changed to the account that it is sending the replies
from. Do you know how I can change it back to the correct account?

Thanks for your help.

One other thing worthy of mention, at random it seems to be using yet
another account. Not often but every once in a while.

There is no way to change the account information back for
the messages that already have the wrong account tag.
The best you can hope for is to prevent it from happening for
new incoming messages.

I've seen instances where the account information was stripped
due to antivirus interference or a bad import, but never where
one account was substituted for another.

Check the account username carefully for each account. If all
are correct, about the only possible suspect left is your
antivirus. Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause
problems with Windows Mail over time.

I had checked all of the account information very carefully several times.
I've been using Norton Internet Security for several months now, and used
Norton Anti-virus before that. I'm not concerned about the messages that
are already tagged. I'd just like to have it back to the way it was
intended to be.

Is there an antivirus that is less troublesome than Norton?
I did shut off Norton for a time but the mail that came in during that time
was still tagged wrong.

As I look down the list of accounts there seems to be no consistency
to the accounts, it changes between three different accounts.

Norton security products are among the top three troublemakers for
Windows Mail. Symptoms often don't surface until several months have
gone by, or until an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Disabling the Norton program is often insufficient. Do a trial uninstall,
followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly
intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

If you decide to dump your Norton Internet Security, we can recommend
a free antivirus that is pretty decent.

Hi Gary,

I decided to try Win Live Mail first, as that seemed to be the easiest path
to take. But I'm not sure that this will work for me. Live mail seems to
want me to create a Hot Mail account for my mail needs. I have been using
Windows Mail which gets my mail from my IP provider (Cox to be exact.) Can
I do this with live mail? I don't know if I want to do this complete
overhaul of my mail program. Seems to be that the cure is worse than the
ailment. As of now, I'm manually changing the from line on my replies and
forwards, of course I will not always remember to change it, so this is not
a perfect solution.

Please tell me the free antivirus that you recommend.

Thanks so much for all your help,

Penny

Windows Live Mail (WLM) can pretty much do anything WM can do,
plus a few extras. Yes, you can set up your Cox account in WLM.
No, you are not required to have a Hotmail account to use WLM.

Until Microsoft releases its free antivirus (currently in beta testing),
the best free one is Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

When you install it, be sure to select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its trouble-causing email scanning
module.
