Forward and Reply markers on email

When you forward or reply to an email, the appropriate arrow appears
indicating which action was taken. Sometimes, I do not get any arrows at
all. Are there exceptions that explain why this is so?

I've only see that happen when a custom mail form was used as opposed to the
standard one.
