formulas for counting

I am trying to use the countif formula to count on an excell spread sheet, I
dont have numbers in the colum I have X, I have used the following formula
=countif(a1:A12,"X") but when I hit the enter button or the control shift
enter button nothing is adding, all it shows is the formula I but in. Please
Help!
 
The cell may be formatted as Text:

1. clear the cell with the formula
2. format the cell as General
3. re-enter the formula
 
The cell may have been formatted as text.

Format to General then F2 + ENTER.
