Formulas as text or zero

I have a spreadsheet that when I try and enter in a formula all that shows is
the formula (i.e. =SUM(A1 +B1). Or if I try to just have it reference a
cell, all I get is zero. Anyone have any ideas please.
 
Hi
check that the cell is not formated as 'Text'. If it is, change the
format to 'General' and re-enter your formula
 
Right click the cell, and go to "Format Cells" make sure in the "Number" tab
that you have "Number" and not "text" selected.

Also, when pasting to a cell, you can use "Paste Speical" and decide if you
paste the formula's value or text.

yes I did. Actually I tried just doing a "Clear Contents" on the cells and
it worked. Go figure. Thanks.
