Formula wont calculate???

My excel will not do simple calculations anymore if they reference
another sheet, like =sheet1b1 + sheet1c1. It will do a =b1+c1, if
calc. is on same sheet. I think my options are messed up somehow, then
again it could be anything. Its never done this before

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated by my grade in accounting!!!
 
i got the syntax right, all i did was click the cell to get them to add,
or subtract.
 
Hey never mind i figured it out

What it was, i imported the input sheet from a group member, and
instead of typing a number say1000, then formatting it so it had a $
symbol, he litterally typed the $ the 1000, so it was in the form of a
text NOT a number.
