Formula syntax {;;;}

HI,
I have a formual
{=sum(if.......)}

when I try to edit the formula, the { } disapear and the formula no longer
works.
If I type these characters in, it still does not work.
What do they ( { } )mean ?

This is a array formula
You must use Ctrl-Shift-Enter

it means it is an array formula. When you edit it enter it using
controshift-enter
it will then do the calcs and th{} will come back
