Formula Editing

First, thank you for the help. I'm not sure how to ask this but I'll try.
When one of my co-workers opens a cell to edit containing a formula Excel
takes him to the worksheet and cell referenced first within the formula. How
does Excel do this? Is there something within Tools>Options that can be
turned on? Several people have asked me if I know how it's done but I'm lost.
Any help / explanation is appreciated.

Tools>Options>Edit.

Uncheck "edit directly in cell".
