Formula copied to new cells returns value, not formula result?

I fear that I have inadvertantly caused a formatting
change that causes cells to show the value of a copied
cell and not the result of the formula in the cell.

Example:

I have 2 columns of numbers(A and B). In the 3rd column
(C)I enter a formula A+B. In the first cell, the result
is correct. When I then copy that fomula down, the same
number (value)appears in every cell as the first cell, not
the correct result of the formula. The formula is in the
cell, but the spreadsheep shows the value of the copied
cell. Also the word "Calculate" shows at the bottom to
the right of "Ready".

Any idea how I fix this? I have been in a cold sweat with
a large project to complete for 2 hours trying to figure
out how to get back to normal.

Try tools|options|Calculation Tab and check the automatic button.

Excel picks this setting up from the first workbook that you opened in that
session. (So it could happen again.)
