Forms and email

On my web site I presently have my email address displayed as a GIF to
avoid spam. However, I would prefer to set up a form. I have written
a simple form to do what I want. Then I realized that if the form
forwards its contents to an email address this address is embedded in
the code. Not very spam safe!

I could periodically change the address, but that is silly. How do I
ensure that my a mail address is not displayed for all to see? Can I
link to a reference in the _private directory? Is there a simple
solution to my problem?

Please note that I am a new user to Frontpage and am not very literate
in HTML. I would prefer a Frontpage solution (if one exists) rather
than having to use HTML.

It's probably not 100% spam-proof, but I use this to try to avoid spam bots.

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
<!-- Begin
var anchortext = "e-mail me";
var mailpart1 = "webmaster";
var mailpart2 = "domain.com";
document.write("<a href=" + "mail" + "to:" + mailpart1 +
"@" + mailpart2 + ">" + anchortext + "</a>")
// End -->
</script>

To use a form you will have to use a custom server side form handler.
Ask your host what server side scripting languages they support (ASP,
asp.NET, PHP, Perl/CGI etc.) and write or search for a form handler.

Stack the form so the bot's dont see the one with the email address.

Summary:

Form (no email, submits to a file) --> Thank you page (which is an identical
form but WITH the email) --> Thank you page (final).

Basically, if the thank you page has another form in it, the FP extensions
automatically submit the second form which does _not_ load in the browser.
For the most part that will prevent the email address from being seen, it
won't however keep someone from manually typing in the first thank you page
to get to it, but you might be able to mess around with permissions and
prevent that.)

Hi Helpful person,

In addition to what some of the others mentioned..obfuscating email
addresses is quite effective. Doing it that way people can still click on
and read the address, but most spam bots cannot read it. Jimco has an add-in
for that called "Spam Spoiler" located here:

http://www.jimcosoftware.com/addins.aspx

Integrates perfectly with FrontPage..but you wouldn't be using it in a form
with this method.

Thanks, this looks really good. I incorrectly assumed that I would
need to use a form to fool of email spam bots. However, the download
is an exe file. What happens when I run it?

The .exe file will set it up in FrontPage. Something to keep in mind is that
if you already have an email address that is getting a lot of spam, this
will not change that your address has already been harvested by spammers..so
you might consider using it with a new email address. I try and consider
email addresses as much as possible as being "disposable" if one starts to
get too much spam I delete it and create a new one.

Obviously. But what then. Does it show up on the menus, or as an
object to insert? How does one use it? I didn't see any instructions
on the originating web site.

Your comment and question was: "However, the download is an exe file. What
happens when I run it?"

I took it at face value. You should have said "obviously" somewhere in that
question instead of your reply ;-)

Yes, I am getting huge amounts of spam (for a simple family email address,
anyway - about 100 per day).
But what if your email address has been circulated to all your family and
commercial sites such as your bank, etc ?

It is quite a chore to chamge it everywhere. In fact, I changed mine some
time ago when I switched ISPs and recently found a site where the old one
was still recorded.

You're right Trevor..it really can be a chore to change. Spam is a real
problem and at least for now our options to reduce/eliminate are somewhat
limited. I try to keep at least 2 email addresses active. For family and
friends I use one..and for businesses I use another. In the end it is
usually the business one that starts getting the most spam. I'm sure many
companies sell email addresses..even if they claim not to.

If your address for family and friends starts getting spammed too much
that's really the easier one to change..Just send out one email to all of
those in your address book that you wish to have it. For businesses though
you need to recall all of those that have it..and then manually go in one
at a time and change it. I wish there was an easier way...actually that
isn't correct..having spam wiped off the planet would be what I would really
like! :) I would like to be the one to decide when or if I ever want to use
Viagra! <g>

If your email address appears in your html page as text there is no way to obscure it

Please explain what you are trying to do in more detail, as you can not attach email as hyperlink to
a textbox.
