Formatting

I have older documents where I put in the format for entering the document
name, page number etc. Now my pc doesn't seem to pick up the format
information it just prints the format which is really frustrating. Any hints
how I can rectify this?
 
There's a setting for printing fields vs. printing the values of
fields. Your version of Word?
 
Word 2003 (I'm very up to date - not!)
