Hey Everybody
I have a slight problem ..... My hard drive on my laptop crashed and i
replaced it... when i put in my windows XP CD to reinstall the OS it does not
boot from the CD.
I tried making a bootable CD and then tried running the set up and by typing
in the DOS screen D:>setup.exe .... and it said this operation cannot be run
in DOS mode.
I then tried installin Windows ME instead and when it was about to do the
routine system check up before intalling the OS a message came up saying
something aout need to partition hard disk ..... I think the becuz the hard
drive is brand new it needs some kinda formatting ...........does anyone know
of a tool or software i can download and use on a cd to boot into DOS at
system startup and format the drive? Or does anyone know what I can do to fix
my laptop?

A good starting point would be to post your question in a
Windows ME newsgroup, since this is what you appear
to have. This newsgroup deals with Windows XP issues.

I think the Windows ME disk should be able to format a drive, you may also
have a CD that came with the new hard drive that will also format a new
drive (but use this as a last resort). Windows XP CD has the ability to
format a drive also.
You can also create a Windows98 boot disk and use fdisk utility to format
the drive if you are creating a FAT32 partition.

If you cannot boot from your Windows XP cd, then you don't have a valid XP
cd. Partitioning and formatting your new hard drive is one of the first
things that the XP installation will do.

Did you set the boot order in the BIOS to CD first?

Since the Windows ME CD booted up, I suspect you just missed the message "Press ant key to boot
from the CD". Remount the XP CD, reboot, and look for the message. You only have a few
seconds to respond...
