Formatting SATA Hard Drive.

Have been using IDE drives for years, now decided to put a SATA HDD in an
external caddy.

Know it needs formatting before the computer will see it BUT can I format
it. NO.

Running Win XPHE on an Asus K8V-X-SE mobo.
Have removed IDE cable with HDD'S from mobo and just left DVD-CDRW drives.
Hooked up SATA to mobo SATA connector, tried various formatting software
including Win XPHE to get it started. No Joy.

Have loaded the Mobo RAID drivers etc no joy.

Any advice please.

Thanks,

Ray.

What kind of external caddy? USB ? Do you need special drivers for XP or
the MB to see the externally connected SATA?

When you boot the m/b bios should show the external drive or have an
option to make the external drive the bootable device. XP may need 3rd
party or SCSI loaded before the start of the installation process. When
the XP CD first starts to boot.

What exactly happens, presumably the sata drive isnt visible ?

Quite a few motherboards including this one have a setting
in the bios which allows the sata drives to be be disabled.
Mainly because the system will boot faster with them
disabled in the bios if there arent any sata drives present.

Have now got the HDD formatted and partitioned. Simple really, just plugged
it into the motherboard and windows saw it. It does help to leave the OS HD
in situ.

Now just wondering if I have a problem with the caddy as the drive does not
seem to be seen by the OS.

Thanks for the advice and help.

Yes, there isnt any other area that it could be if its not seen by the
OS only when its in the caddy and not when directly connected.

Hi Rod,

Seems like the caddy ain't working. Have seen the drive ONCE and started to
move things over when everything locked up.

Will phone the seller and see about a replacement, otherwise it's fixed in
the case.
