Formatting phone numbers using Special or Custom ..Help!!!!

In Excel Worksheet, Using <format><cells><special><phonenumbers> I get
(2) 228-8964, NOT (123) 456-6789. I want to enter phone numbers with area
code and not have to enter dashes or parantheses. Why is it not working??!!!
You can see it is leaving only one number in the area code parantheses.

If you'll right click on the cell or cells in question, select Format
Cells, then Custom. Copy the text string below into your Clipboard,
then paste it into the Type textbox that appears in that window.

[<=9999999]###-####;(###) ###-####

Does that solve the problem?

Dave:
I did as you said, which was the same text string that I had. It still only
allows 1 digit in the parantheses and thusly drops the last two digits of the
phone number. I cannot understand why.
