formatting marks too lignt - how to make bold/bigger

Hi,

I'm trying to use the formatting marks for some editing, but they appear too
light on the screen (much lighter than the normal text).

Is there a way to make the marks darker?
 
Do you have a Mac? The only reason I know of for formatting marks to be
"light" (gray) is that this is a Mac version of Word.
