Formatting changes date

I can't imagine what would be causing this, but when I type a date, for
example 3/1/09, then format it (in any way, general, short, medium, long) it
changes the date to 3/24/09. Does anyone know what could be causing such a
specific error?

Formatting doesn't change the value of a cell. Also, when you format a date
as a number, Excel displays the serial date (like 37630). And your
terminology is confusing -- there is no short, medium or long format in any
version of Excel I know of -- those are Windows settings.

You'll need to give us more information on exactly what you are doing (ie,
the specific format you are choosing). Also identify your Windows regional
settings, and the version of Excel you have.

Regards,
Fred.
