Katie, you can use your WinXP CD to format and reinstall. Just save
the important files you have if any
and then go into the Bios and set the cdrom as first boot device.
Choose new install and Advanced.
This will allow you to select which partition to install XP on and to
format the partition. For more info

Katie,

Before you consider anything as traumatic as a format and reinstall of
Windows, think about simply uninstalling Norton and then cleaning your
system using free applications like Ad-aware, Pest Patrol, Spybot Search and
Destroy and Spyware Blaster. Protect your system from virus attacks by
using AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. As the name implies, it is absolutely
free and it works great! I use it exclusively. Download and install Zone
Alarm, a great software firewall, and totally free!

You have options other than a reinstallation of the operating system.
Norton is known to cause serious problems. I would consider getting rid of
it and, if it was a stand-alone purchase, return it for a refund. You are
not the only person to have problems with Norton. These newsgroups are full
of people just like you, and just like you, they got hosed by Norton.

That is major overkill for such a problem. But if they have been
quarantined they should not be running. Can you please tell us more
about just which ones these are, as reported by Norton?

It is probable that they are the sort of parasite that gets loaded at
startup. In any case you may have something of that sort - go to
www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm and use the cleanup it suggests.
