formatting a new external hard drive

I'm getting a 60G external hard drive to augment the 18G on this Gateway 450
laptop v2002. I've read everything I can find on the process and am
overwhelmed with the information. I have downloaded the Windows ntbackup
(suggested by someone) and also the SoftSwift enhancing gizmo for it, here
....

http://www.softswift.com/

.... is anyone familiar with this process and is it suitable for us
tech-challenged types or would you suggest something like Backup Commander or
it's ilk? I'm really nervous about these strange things even though I have
step-by-step instructions. These commercial software things (about $50) say
it's sooooo easy with their stuff.

HEY CHAS i bought a external hard drive at e bay. cheap.i didn't know what
i had bought.lol I LOVE THIS external hdd !!!!!!! the girl down the road from
me bought one.she LOVES IT !!!! they'r a lot of fun!!! the ONE thing that
shocked me was the external hdd is SO EASY TO USE !!! i mean it !! don't buy
back up soft ware.u don't need it !! at first...when u download something
plug in external hdd double click my comput on desk top , just right click
what u'v downloaded,
left click copy, point to external drive, right click, left click paste u'v
backed it up. its magic ! see back up stuff is in windows ! (when u download
stuff its already ziped u don't need to pay $ 80.00 for winzip)usaly a back
up thing is $100.00 to $200.00 its a steal box with a hard drive sometimes
with fan. what i bought was a usb to ide kit (a wire with a 40 pin connecter
& a transformer) very easy to use!
$35.00 at computer store.i bought it at e bay new for $10.00 (u have to add
a hdd) but i just unpluged it from hdd & pluged it into a DVD burner put nero
burning into it put soft ware on c drive then burn cd's watch movies without
installing DVD thing into computer.seagate says u can get seagate back up at
pc store for
$200.00 or walmarts for $90.00 allso theres western dignal &
maxtor.seagate's most dependably mator is bigist chepest & western is
between.usaly draging stuff to back up dosn't work. stick to copy &
paste.JUST REMEBER UNPLUG back up if u reinstall windows.lol (u might format
wrong drive) u don't put windows on the back up drive but u must format it
first.i think ur suppose to format in fat 32 so drive can move to linux. when
they
sell u a hdd u could look at 5000 rpm to save a few bucks.they will tell u
5000
will slow down ur pc.but it won't because it's not going into ur pc.i think
the reason we like these external hdds..is because u can unplug while surfing
& if u get hit with virues it can't destroy back up.the external back up u
get will be for usb 2. it can be pluged into usb 1 or 2 both are fast ! maybe
i didn't give u anuf
info.hehehe
