In that case the drive obviously needs to be
formatted the way the STB wants it formatted.

I don't know much about the Scientific Atlanta settop box, but I do
know a bit about Tivos. Tivos run Linux, and the hard drives are
formatted with a Linux file system (extended2 if I remember
correctly).

What is STB?
I suspect you are referring to a proprietary format by the provider of the
DVR?

My cable provider answered an inquiry about the WD external by stating it's
not authorized by either the cable company or the cable box provider?

The set top box referred to in the Western Digital spruik for that drive.

Its not usually proprietary, just not necessarily
what too many can format that easily.

Most do use some non proprietary format.

Its only suitable for STBs that can use a plug
in hard drive and only a subset of those too.

That would be the usual one. Although if the Tivo mounts it as
"-t auto" any filesystem the kernel understands will work.
