formatting a date to look like Wed Jan 3

How do I use the custom formatting to get this result?

You're right,

ddd mmm d did it.
I had ddd, mmmm d
I had a comma and an extra "m".

I can't replicate that. I tested the format "ddd mmm d" in both Excel 97 and
Excel 2007, and both displayed the string "Mon Jan 1". Are you user you have
3, not 4, 'm' characters for the month. 'mmmm' will return the full name of
the month. 'mmm' returns the 3-character month abreviation.
