Hello Experts,
I have Excel 97 Pro on Win98SE.

In certain situations we need to display a string with a number in a cell
and use the actual numerical amount (without string) in calculations. This
happens when we format a cell to display a currency sign, %age sign etc. In
this way can we define our own strings to be displayed with a number in a
cell?

Thank you,

Format/Cells/Number/Custom/Type: 0.00" your string"

Look up Number Format Codes in HELP for more information.

You should be able to use a custom number format

Examples
#" mysymbol
0" mysymbol
"mysymbol "
"mysymbol "

When you create a custom number format you can see the displayed result just above where you are entering the custom style

Good Luck

I learnt Excel from help files. I did see the codes before posting but
couldn't figure out the way.

You should be able to use a custom number format.

Examples:
#" mysymbol"
0" mysymbol"
"mysymbol "#
"mysymbol "0

Yes, sometimes the HELP files are obscure. I still find it a challenge just to
find the number format codes <g>.
