Formating negative numbers

I have Excel 2002 and have never had this problem in other
versions.

I have a worksheet that has some areas where the numbers
entered are negative. I cannot get it to display the
number as negative.
I selected format / cells / number tab / number category
and the tried both options -1234 & the (1234) and they did
not work.
Help!!

Hi
probably the numbers are stored as text values. Try the following after
you have changed the format:
- select an empty cell and copy it
- select your numbers
- goto 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose 'Add' as action
