Format & reinstall

Hi,

My computer's starting run really slow and I'm condidering to reformat th
HDD and reinstall.

I have Wndows XP Home Service pack 2, but I have downloaded & installed a
heap of upgrades over time.

Is there a way to do what I want to do and not have to download and install
the upgrades as I do not have broadband.

(This also applies to such programs as Media player, Windows Defender, etc.)

a "repair installation" before
attempting a "new installation" should
keep your updates installed.

Thanks for that, but I'm a bit confused. Are you suggesting instead of
formating the HDD and reinstalling all my programs that I run a repair
installation of the Windows program? If so, how do I do that?

Are you also saying that I can't access the updates I have on the computer
and reinstall them again somehow If I do decide to FORMAT and start all over
again? (I suspect that it's not necessarily WinXP that's causing my slow
computer and reinstalling over the installation may not fix the problem.)
However, I'm open to suggetions, as if reinstalling or repairing can be of
benefit, I'll give it a try.

Not so. All updates after the SP level of the installation CD used for the
repair install will need to be reinstalled, so for example, if the repair is
done with an XP CD with SP2 then the 70+ post SP2 updates will have to be
reinstalled from windows update.

Here is a link with tips for a slow computer.

There is no way to port the windows updates in the current installation to a
new installation. One way to plan for this in advance, is to download each
individual update before installing it, save that to CD, then install from
your machine. When automatic updates or the express option in the Windows
Update site installs an update, once it's completed the installation files
are deleted.

It's not so bad to do this if you keep up with it, but to do 70+ at a time
on dial up would be onerous to say the least.
