Format date

In an excel sheet(Excel 2002)we have 2 columns with a date
in the format of (mm/dd/yyyy). These are displaying as a
number(XXXXX)which is not what we want. I have tried to
reformat the cells(format-cells-number-date) but nothing
changes. On the input bar, it displays the date format
correctly(mm/dd/yyyy). If I change to bold, it changes the
cell. The sheet/cells are not locked. What else could be
wrong?
