I am trying to type the following in a cell and I want the format as general,
but when I type it in, it automatically changes to date format

1/5233

can anyone help

You forgot the equal sign

=1/5233

Or if you want text then put a single quote in front of the string

'1/5233

Hi,

Excel is recognizing this as January 5233! You can preformat the cell to
Number or Text to avoid this, but be careful if you choose Number Excel will
divide 1 by 5233 and give you .0001910949....
If you choose TEXT then it will be displayed as 1/5233

If this helps, please click the Yes button

Cheers,
