Format C (Hard) Drive

Trying format my c drive so that i can do a clean install of my system.

When I use the command promt format c: I get an error...format cannot run
because the vol is used by and other process. etc. I say Yes to force the
dismount.
Then I get...cannot lock the drive vol still in use.

If I go to my computer select the drive then select format...I get an error
Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any utilities or programs using this
drive make sure not window is displaying the content of the drive.

As far as I know there are no other program using the drive.

I guess I must be missing something pretty basic.

You are trying to format the drive from within windows which can not
be done.
