Forgot winXP password

My 14 year old son has forgoten his WinXP Home password on
his computer. He is the only admin. user so as to keep
his sister from his programs and homework. She has her own
limited account. I have searched the web but only found
two solutions. The first literally has you *hack* the
password. This seems a little barbaric. The other way
uses the command line "control passwords2" but I believe
this only works if you have admin. access (see above).
Also, I would like any recommendation on how to keep this
from happening again.

boot to safe mode login as admin if no password was given during setup then
it should be blank
hold on for others may have a clearer response...
