Forcing MS Word 2003 to use normal view on XSL/XML documents

I often compare XSL templates with each other to see what changes have been
made. Typically, I use MS Word's "Compare and Merge Documents" feature.
However, I'm unable to do this with MS Word 2003, because it insists on using
an XML data view for XSL documents.
Is there a way of forcing MS Word 2003 to use a normal view on
XSL/XML documents?

I just had to do this the other week. My (maybe poor) workaround was to
rename the file to *.txt ... :)
