Here is the situation:
We have several labs all Windows XP SP2 for students to use and work on
their papers and stuff.
The students are using USB Flash drives to keep their data or to take it
back to their rooms to work on it in their rooms, or even to share group
project items between each other.
The problem is that we cannot know a head of time what USB Flash drive the
student is using to have the system "preload" the driver for the Flash drive.
So when a student brings their USB Flash drive into a lab, and plug-it in,
they get prompted for new hardware drivers. Since we do not let them have
administrator rights to the systems, they are stuck and cannot use the USB
Flash drive.
This quite easily upsets a lot of people, not just students.
Is there a way to have Windows XP just use the Generic USB Storage driver
for any USB Flash drive that is plugged into it without windows having to go
through the whole new device found where are the drivers issue. We would like
it to default all the time to the generic USB drivers loaded with windows XP
SP2, so that students can use their keys on all the systems in the labs,
without having a staff member have to log on to all the systems in the lab,
with that students key and plug it in to every usb port on the system.
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated on this.
