Force MS Word to use UK Dictionary

How can I permanently delete the US dictionary from MS word and force
it to use the UK dictionary for whatever document is open.

I am sick of opening documents which have words such as
'specialised' and 'specialized' where MS Word thinks both words
are spelt correctly (I actually failed an exam due to this)

I've tried to change the default language to UK in word based on
Normal Template (and deleted the US settings in control panel) to no
avail.
 
I can't see why you should have failed an exam over the ised - ized endings
as both are correct English usage.

The proofing language is a paragraph style parameter and if you import
documents they will be imported with whatever language is applied to the
text. You can set Word to only use UK English spellings for *new* documents
that you create - and it helps to turn off the tools > language > set
language > automatically detect option.

It was an exam in marketing where big points are deducted if the
document isn't formatted correctly (i.e. dual spelling)

So what's the best way to remove US spelling, do a search and replace
on a document or autocorrect?

Ctrl+A to select the entire document, then go to Tools | Language | Set
Language and apply the correct language.

Actually, language is part of character, not paragraph, formatting. This
makes it possible to embed words in another language in a paragraph and have
them properly proofed.
 
Agreed - what I was trying to get over was the fact that the proofing is
associated with the text and not the application :)
