Thanks so much for your prompt reply to my problem
regarding opening an excel file I received. I downloaded
the excel viewer and was successful in opening the file.
Ken, I realize excel is not part of my office package but
I thought I can open excel files with my quattro pro.
Only problem being I don't know how to do that. The file
came on Yahoo mail and when I tried to open it, a message
popped up saying windows cannot open this file. When I
got the box that lets you choose which program to use to
open the file, I clicked on quattro pro but nothing
happened. Any advice on this matter will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks again guys!

I don't think QP can open excel files. I don't have it, so not 100% sure. To
check: open QP and goto: file, open. In the file type box see if .xls file
type is an option. If not then QP cannot open excel files.

Yes, QP can open .xls files.

Thanks for verifying. The op should be good to go then. They should try to
open the file from within QP.

Indeed it can, although not necessarily from the latest versions
of Excel. Jeanne's problem be that the Excel file she is trying
to open may be from a version that her version of QP doesn't
support.

Thanks for the info. I don't use QP, do you know what versions of excel
files that the newest version of QP will open? Just for my personal info.

You're welcome.

I don't use QP,

Although I have the WordPerfect 11 Suite installed here, I only
use WordPerfect itself. I prefer WordPerfect to Word, but use
Excel in preference to Quattro Pro.

The latest version is QP11. The open dialog box gives two choices
for Excel files:

Microsoft Excel v5/v7
Microsoft Excel 97

However that's as of today. Version 12 is due to be released next
week, and it might change then. I don't know.

Good point Ken, however all versions of Excel I know of are able to
"Save As" earlier versions of .xls files.
