Footnotes and Endnotes

I want to change settings for endnotes. "Help" and all other support sources
say "On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and then click Footnote." But
when I click "Footnotes" Word enters a footnote number instead of giving me
the settings pane. Can someone help dawn strike on Marblehead?
 
The settings for footnotes and endnotes are the options on the dialog that
is displayed if you use Insert > Reference > Footnotes.

If you're not getting a dialog at that point, try resetting the menu.
