footnote discrepancy

I am working in excel and have a document that is three pages long. I
inserted a footnote to display "1 of 3" etc... but instead it displays "1 of
9" etc... Why does it think that there are 9 pages in my document and how can
I change it to thinking there are only 3? I hilighted pages 4-100 and deleted
the cells and also made sure none of those pages contained cells that were
outlined, underlined, etc.
