I've downloaded a .ttf file into my windows/fonts folder
but it is no appearing as a font option in Word, does
anyone know why?

Yes - you've not installed it. You don't download directly to the Fonts
folder. You download to a folder on the hard driver and then open the fonts
folder and install the font. Alternatively, you can do what I've done and
make a shortcut to the Fonts folder in the send to right click menu, by
opening the Control Panel and your user folder (C:\Documents and
Settings\Your username\SendTo - you may need to go to folder options on the
Tools menu and click the View tab. Scroll down and select the 'show hidden
files and folders' radio button). When you've done this, you can select the
SendTo folder. Open it and drag the Fonts folder to the SendTo folder (don't
worry it'll automatically create a shortcut). The next time you need to
install a font, simply right click the icon, and go to the 'send to' menu.
Cuts out the middle man.
