of the point or the size of the pitch?

Does the font size in Microsoft Word XP refer to the size
of the point or the size of the pitch?

The number of pixels per character which I regard as the point size. IOW,
larger letter or character equals larger points. Pitch may change it
slightly. This is my understanding; other ideas ?
