I would like to change the color of the font on the
desktop. I've seen where you can change many attributes,
but the only choice of text color is white. Can I change
this?

Right click the desktop and then click
properties\appearance tab-advanced button then click on
any one of the words in the boxs and you will see that the
colour option is available to the right of the "font"
line. You can change font style, size, and colour of each one
of the font locations by clicking the messages in the boxs
one at a time. Once you click ok and close this window be
sure to click apply on the main window. Have fun.

Using just XP?
If you remove the drop shadows from icon labels (System> Advanced>
Performance> Settings> Visual Effects) and select a white or very light
background color (Display> Desktop> Appearance> Item> Desktop), you'll end
up with black text instead of white.
