Follow-Up to Removing Start Menu Shortcuts

The items I am referring to are actually above the list
of most often used programs, in the area where my icon
for Outlook is located. (I had found the place to reset
that list earlier)
The stubborn shortcuts are ones I made to specific
websites. I kept them in a separate folder, then dragged
them each over the start menu and dropped them into the
upper left area of the start menu. I can right click them
and get "remove from this list" option, but they won't go
away.

I hope this helps clarify my problem.

The item you refer to aren't shortcuts. They are a count
of the program, mostly. In the Start Menu properties you
can reset the list.
Or
Set
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Explorer\Advanced
StartMenuInit to 0 which will reset it to as a new user
on the next logon.

I've added several shortcuts to the left column of the
start menu, and now I am having trouble removing them.
When I right click them, I am given a choice to "Remove
from This List," but selecting that does not remove them
from the list. I've found where the actual shortcuts
reside and have deleted them, but there they remain on
the start menu. Now when I try to launch the removed
shortcuts, it says "The item you selected is
unavailable...Do you want to remove it from the list?" to
which I answer "Yes." But there it still remains on my
start menu after relogging in and restarting my computer.

Is there a place to manually edit the start menu list of
shortcuts, or am I missing something else?

At the risk of repeating myself:

'Pinned' shortcut info is stored in 3 values under the key:

'HKEY_LOCAL_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage'

The value names and types are:

Favorites REG_BINARY
FavoritesChanges REG_DWORD
FavoritesResolve REG_BINARY

If you double click on Favorites or FavoritesResolve you'll be able to see bits of text that refer
to your items. The fact that they are stored in binary makes it difficult to edit individually. If
you delete these 3 values & reboot, every pinned item except IE & OE will be gone. The only
drawback is you will have to repin the shortcuts you want, but that seems a small price to pay to be
rid of the annoyance of dead links staring at you
