folders with thousands of files

Our web server has several constantly-accessed folders
that each have over 6000 files in them. I've heard that
ideally, win2K folders function best with less than 1000
files in them. Is this true? If so, how important is it
to limit folders to 1000 or fewer items?

No you will not have performance problems with only a few thousand files
in a folder. Once you get to hundreds of thousands of files then you
will start to see performance drop some.
