folder type for Notes folder incorrect

P

Pedja

Hi.
Earlier today I intalled FranklinCovey's PlanPlus 2.0 on my
system running Outlook 2003 against Exchange 2003. After
looking at the program I decided it was not for me and I
uninstalled it. After I uninstalled PlanPlus my Notes
shortcut stopped working. I thought that maybe the ost file
got corrupted so I deleted it and resynced to Exchange with
a new one, but the situation is still the same. Apparently,
the folder type on Notes folder has changed to "Mail and
Post items", so it's now showing up as one of my mail
folders, and neither the notes shortcut or any of the notes
views are working for it.

Is there any way to change the folder type back to Notes?
There is no ui exposed to do this, and since Notes is one
of the default folders for the mailbox, I am not able to
delete it and recreate a new one.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Yowza. Don't know how to do this, but the blunt force approach might be the
right one - export to PST, recreate the mailbox, import from PST. Icky, but
it would work.

Hi. Thanks for replaying. I was afraid that that would be
the answer. Unfortunately, I have one of those hosted
exchange accounts, so the process might be a bit more
complicated than I hoped.

There wouldn't be a way of changing this through access, by
any chance? Could I link to the Exchange store and then
change it that way? I would think that there is some
protection that prevents a person from changing the basic
structure of the exchange store, but I am not quite sure
how the folder was then changed in the first place.

Thanks again for your response,
Pedja

yuk - that would indeed be a pain in the butt. It isn't normal for the
default folders to even have their names changed, let alone their
type.....did you check with franklin support to see if this was a known
answer & if they had a fix?

BTW, which hosted Exchange provider are you using, and what do you think of
it? I've looked into this for small clients and a while back was very
disappointed w/their security model (=none)....I imagine it's changed since
Blaster put the fear of g-d into them, but am wondering what your experience
has been - do they force VPN or SSL or something good like that for your
connection?

I've been using mailstreet.net since September and have
been pretty pleased with them. They provide both vpn and
rpc over https access, and OWA requires https. The system
is quite stable and there have only been a handful of times
when my connectivity was briefly disrupted, but I am not
sure that it was not my network that was responsible. I
have been connecting using rpc over https ever since they
brought it online, and it works very well. Unfortunately, I
don't think they actually force you to use vpn/ssl. But
they are updating the system regularly, so that might have
changed. When I signed up for the service you could still
use a standard lan rpc connection. Overall, though, they
are quite responsive, so you might want to drop them an
email/call, and ask them for the details of the security
setup. What I do know is that put a lot of work into the
system, and are constantly adding new functionality. For
wireless access, for example, you they both a blackberry
server and wireless activesync, and in January they will be
installing a Good Link server as well, for use with new
Treo 600s. The java-based administration console is also
quite good.

As for the Notes folder, here is the situation. I was
actually able to delete the folder from OWA, and create a
new one that has the correct type. It's bizarre that it let
me do it, but so far it seems to work fine, and both the
shortcut and the views are now behaving normally in
Outlook. I am not sure that this is intended behavior, but
it seems that from OWA you can actually alter and delete
default folders. I will need to see whether I can get
syncing with a Palm to work, but at least on the desktop
things seem to be back to normal.

I emailed FranklinCovey when this first happened and they
responded, but the only information they sent me was on how
to completely remove PlanPlus from my machine (reg keys,
etc). Since the change happened on the server, however,
that didn't really help. After I test everything I will
send them an email telling them what I ended up doing, in
case someone else has the same problem.

Are we sure the shortcut just didn't get changed in the Outlook Bar? Display
the Folder List by selecting Folder List from the View menu. Is your regular
Notes folder there? If not, can you delete this new, broken Notes folder?

Try this:

Close Outlook

Select Start | Run

Enter outlook.exe /ResetFolders
(note the space between "exe" and "/ResetFolders")

Select OK

Glad you got it working, and thanks much for the info on mailstreet. I will
look into it. :)

like a charm. Thanks much!!!
