XPish

Hi

This might be a strange problem...One of my folder has
been recreated several times in to depth of its path and
now i am unable to delete the file under the path at all.

the path became like this

F:\Movies\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1
\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1
\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1
\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1\cd1
\cd1\cd1\Avseq01.dat

Please help me.

Hi

I've never seen anything like this before. Which program does Avseq01.dat belong to - or is it a download via a P2P program?

Not really - only the apparent lack of at least one obvious answer is
strange so perhaps I'm (or my newsgroup mirror is) missing something?

Note the sentence:
"Note that the shell and the file system may have different requirements. It
may be possible to create a path with the API that the shell UI cannot
handle."

Thus a possible remedial sequence of actions may include one or more of the
following:

1.Open up a DOS/CMD window and use relevant CD, REN, RD , DEL commands to
shorten the filename/path until less than 255 chars and can be deleted.

2. Investigate (or post new thread in appropriate forum) to resolve your
Multimedia application, Download manager or whatever that is incrementing
the path length.

3. Investigate availability of API/shell fix to avoid problem in future.

4. Write to Microsoft to request fix

5. Write to Bill Gates to request fix

6. Retire and die.

7. Receive and apply fix....

Trivia note: I recall problem has been around since Windows origins in the
days of
OS2 and HPFS in the late 80's?<vbg>

Hi Cass

I enquired about the P2P program after looking at the OP's download path. If it is a (part) downloaded file via a P2P program I would look toward the file itself - or some other 'nasty' downloaded by that file - causing the problem. There again - my suggestion is probably way off - as usual.

We've got 'Googly' in the UK dicts. - won't be long before 'Googling' gets in there - I bet.

Hi, XPish.

I have no idea what might have caused the problem, but here's a way that
SHOULD delete the file and all the subdirectories in the path.

Open a "DOS" window. Type: rd F:\Movies\cd1 /s

Answer "yes", you are sure.

This should remove the top cd1 directory - and all the subdirectories and
files within it, including the *.dat file at the bottom of the tree.

Please post back and tell us if it worked. If not, tell us exactly what you
did and exactly what happened. In a newsgroup, we all learn from each
other. ;<)

Question is - why did the problem occur in the 1st place? A P2P download...

Yes, but 'googly' refers to a slow, left arm bowling action in cricket.

Hi Cass

You must be near Lords/The Oval as well as Wimbledon - you missed out spin. My wife has a completly different definition of a 'Googly'!!!!

I wonder if Xpish did a backup and included the backup location in the
folders to be backed up? That might create an almost endless recursion
of nested folders, depending on the backup application.

A command line del with wildcards might work.

You couldn't be further from the truth - I used to go to Lord's several times a years and Wimbledon if the tickets were available. Football is game for 'Nancy's - they fall down and stay there until they get 'sponged'. Take us beating the Aussies - sorry David if you are read this - that is a game - knocked over and then up again - no bloody 'sponging'.

If you're not far from Lord's you must live near to a very good MVP friend of mine - not necessarily an XP MVP.

take it you're not really a cricket or a tennis fan? I've only ever been to
Lord's once (being on a limited income, it was to the 5th day of the first
test we played against the Sri Lankans last summer and the ticket was only
£10). After the game our lot buggered off without stopping for so much as an
autograph. The Sri Lankans, OTOH, were only too willing to sign autographs
and chat. Aravinda da Silva was so keen (people were asking him to talk to
their fathers/brothers/uncles/cousins/sisters/wives, on their mobiles) that
Tilekeratne (sp) had to drag him onto the coach! I have a photo of myself
with him and I have to say that he's the most charming man I've ever met.
He's a god back home, but he's still 'normal'. He'll be missed. That was
his last tour of England so I wanted to see him.

I can't see David Beckham/Michael Owen/Paul Scholes/Joe Cole et al being
quite so personable. Found out the other day that, if you include
endorsements, DB earns in the region of half-a-million a WEEK! That's more
than most will see in a lifetime! £26 millon a year. Mind you, that's
peanuts compared to what Michael Jordan was earning at the peak of his
career.

Will and Amethyst,

This is an XP newsgroup, that is, help and support for the many that have problems with XP seeking help, and is not an encounter group for daily idle chit-chat. When you make posts like these, you are wasting bandwidth, and the time of others seeking help because they click on these messages. Please socialise in the proper groups, ie, alt. I-violate-the-rules-I-set-on-others-because-my-chit-chat-is-more-important-than-their-irrelevant-help-requests.
