Focus is not visually appearing on the checkbox/radio if set via c

I have a button (it can be link etc.) on the screen, that sets focus on the
first element of the checkbox array.
If I move focus to some another window (other than current IE session) and
come back - clicking on the button will actually set the focus to the
checkbox but the dotted box that visually indicates it won't appear (same
problem with radio.)
Any ideas how to solve it?

Don't click. Tab to the button instead.
