Flush out old email address info ?

T

Trevor S

Why when I type a contact in the "TO" section when stating a new email does
it select contacts email adress's that no longer exist ?

eg A freinds work email address has changed (he changed jobs), I have
updated his contact information but as I start to type the address, Outlook
2002 starts to fill in the contact for me (thank you) but then I TAB to the
next field it is his old address that Outlook selects ! This address no
longer exists in the Contact database, so wher eis it getting the info and
how do I stop it doing that ?

So the questions are

1. Where is Outlook 2002 getting it's contact information from ?
2. How do I flush it's cache to stop it selecting contact email adresss
that no longer exist ! but allow it to preserve the smart in fill behaviour
?

hi Trevor,
outlook 2002?

You could try typing the name in the send box and letting
it auto complete. Then double click the offending item,
and it should appear in its own window where default
settings can be altered along with lots of other things.

It is the cache indeed. If you see an item you don't want anymore use the
arrow keys to select it in the dropdown list and press DELETE

Yep, as I said in my post.

Okay, did that

Yes but when I do that it takes me to the info for the contact which HAS
the CORRECT information. in this case the email address for a contact). The
autocomplete information is INCORRECT (and old email address for the
contact), which is the problem I want to fix, to stop it displaying the
incorrect information in auto complete.

It is the cache indeed.

As I suspected
If you see an item you don't want anymore use
the arrow keys to select it in the dropdown list and press DELETE

In this case (and in dozens of others) there is no drop down list, just the
one entry which has the incorrect contact information. If I try and
delete, all it does is delete it off the screen from to the right off the
"TO" section and as soon as I start to type it in again, it brings up the
cached incorrect information... again.

Which means every time I go to send a new email I have to select the "To"
button and scroll down the contact list, as auto complete can't be trusted
because it is using oudated information from the "cache" :(

Outlook 2003 corrects the inability to delete single entries.
If you're using Outlook 2002, you must create a second entry so you can then
delete the first.

That doesn't help (I have 2002) as I have the correct entry in the Contact
database and it is not listed at all by autocomplete, I added another entry
as well, and it is not listed, autocompelte only uses the incorrect entry
when it goes to put an entry in the To field.

Thanks for the attempt, I will have to get used to not using autocomplete
as about 1/4 of my contacts have changed email address's over the years and
auto complete always uses the incorrect old one information, I get caught
out, often not double checking before clicking "Send"

When you start typing the name and you get the popup containing the
suggestions, use the arrow keys to highlight the bogus address and press the
Delete key.
