Floppy drives tries to activate

I am using Windows XO The A: drive (floppy drive) tries to activate all the
time without a disk in the drive The light comes on and it makes a sound
every 5 or 7 seconds.

Open device mgr,expand floppy drive,R.click on it,select:disable Close out,
when its ever needed (2X a year maybe),reactivate thru device mgr

We've seen this on 16-bit programs.

Every time XP tries to open a file, it searches the A: drive first. The only
reasonable fix was to leave a blank floppy in the drive.
