Floppy Drive

B

Bob

I removed my LS 120 floppy drive and installed a new 1.44
floppy drive and WindowsXP Pro Hardware Manager says it
is working properly but Explorer does not see "A" drive.
Any suggestions on what to do to get Explorer to see new
drive?

Thanks

Bob, make sure your A drive is enabled in the Bios and the red stripe
on the ribbon cable is aligned with pin1 on the
drive and motherboard.

Bob,
The first thing that comes to mind is your CMOS settings.
When the computer first starts up (before Windows), there
is usually a key you can hit (the Delete key for most
CMOSs) that will take you into the computer settings. In
one of those settings you can choose the type of drive
for the A: drive. If you just installed it without
changing the CMOS settings, my guess is that the computer
itself is configured incorrectly.

I had reset the CMOS. After posting original message I
rebooted and XP said it was drive "B." Don't know why it
is not called "A" but at least I can read from the drive.
Will see if I can boot from it later.

Thanks all

Don't know if they still do it, but some BIOS allowed you to switch the
floppy letter to A or B.

If the drive is showing up as B in the BIOS, then you've got it attached
to the wrong connector or the cable is in wrong or something. The A
drive goes "after" the twist and the B drive goes "before" the twist.
Colored (usually red) stripe goes by Pin 1.
